The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has released figures showing that Internet traffic over the Christmas season in 2002 was double that of last year.

Most (96 per cent) of the UK`s Internet traffic is handled by LINX, which reported that Internet activity peaked at 15Gb/s on Christmas day (25 December) and 17Gb/s on Boxing Day (26 December). In 2001 UK Internet activity peaked at 8Gb/s on Christmas Day whilst Boxing Day activity reached a high of 9Gb/s.

LINX usually records peak traffic flows of 22Gb/s on a regular working day - 1Gb being equivalent to around 60,000 average e-mail messages.
