TELECOMWORLDWIRE-21 January 2002-Estonian fixed network market transformed due to liberalisation (C)1994-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Market intelligence and advisory firm IDC has claimed that competition in Estonia has transformed the fixed-voice market.

The company goes on to state that following market liberalisation the monopoly Eesti Telefon has lost market share to a number of new entrants. These developments could be repeated in neighbouring Latvia and Lithuania once they liberalise, according to the company.

Market liberalisation in Estonia begun on 1 January 2001 with several companies - including Finnish Uninet and Swedish Tele2 - being awarded licenses to operate fixed networks.
