TELECOMWORLDWIRE-19 February 2003-IDC forecasts Internet penetration growth for Central and Eastern Europe(C)1994-2003 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Market intelligence and advisory firm IDC has predicted that Internet penetration in Central and Eastern Europe is set to reach 17% in 2003.

IDC goes on to state that it expects this figure to rise to 27% by 2006 - mostly driven by users in the workplace and schools. The company also states that low home penetration rates are preventing the region from catching up with Internet penetration levels in Western Europe.

Total e-commerce spending in the region is expected to reach USD4.4bn in 2003 with business to business transactions accounting for roughly 90% of that volume. By 2006 this figure will reportedly have reached USD17.6bn.
