German carrier Lufthansa has begun offering inflight broadband Internet access on its Boeing 747-400 aircraft.

The new service, branded as FlyNet, enables passengers to use their personal laptops and ones provide by the carrier to gain high-speed connections to the Internet, including full access to their personal or business e-mail accounts and files. Lufthansa will demonstrate the service - powered by the Connexion by Boeing system developed by Boeing Co - to passengers free-of-charge for a three-month period.

The airline is planning to equip about 80 long-range Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A330/A340 aircraft with the service in mid-2004.
