Japanese mobile phone company DoCoMo has signed a development deal with mobile technology company Renesas Technology worth USD65m over three years.
The deal will see the two companies jointly develop a single-chip LSI which will make 3G handsets compatible with both W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS networks. Currently two chips need to be imbedded for 3G handsets to access both networks.
The development of a single-chip LSI would also lead to the upgrading of functions and stand-by times of 3G handsets, reports Cellular News.
