TELECOMWORLDWIRE-19 August 2005-Strategy Analytics reports on Wi-Fi chip market(C)1994-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

The "Wi-Fi Component Forecast and Vendor Share" report from Strategy Analytics Inc, a global research and consulting firm, has been released, providing analysis of Wi-Fi volume.

The report states that the Wi-Fi chip market is expected to increase in value from USD900m in 2004 to USD2.1bn in 2009, driven by new applications, competition and technology developments. Falling Wi-Fi radio chip prices, growing integration and adoption of front-end PA modules will help push Wi-Fi into an increasing number of platforms. It is predicted that Wi-Fi enabled cell phones will dominate the market by 2009, whereas a majority of chip shipments today are down to demand from notebook computers.

GaAs is reportedly leading the power amplifier market, offering low power consumption and good performance at 5GHz, while SiGe vendors are said to have made progress against GaAs at 2.4GHz. Strategy Analytics however claimed that the number of Wi-Fi chip market vendors has fallen significantly in the last two years and said that Atheros, Broadcom and Intel currently control over 50% of the market.
