TELECOMWORLDWIRE-9 February 2005-IDC predicts annual decline in European voice telephony revenues(C)1994-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Market intelligence company IDC has reported that revenues from voice telephony in Europe are set to decline by 3% annually until 2008.

The company puts the decline down to a loss of connections and traffic revenue due mainly to mobile substitution and dial-up broadband migration, and increased competition from companies offering VoIP services. IDC said that because of these new trends it estimates that the European fixed-voice market will decline from USD108bn in 2003 to USD95bn by 2008, a loss of USD13bn.

A spokesperson for IDC said that voice service providers need to adopt long-term strategies to cope with the loss of revenues, and consider whether it is viable to offer fixed-voice services at all.
