Communications company Alltel (NYSE:AT) has revealed that it will take part in a voluntary federal programme to offer assistance to Hurricane Katrina victims.

Wireless service or credits will be offered by Alltel for current and new customers who meet the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) eligibility requirements. The company said that the FCC had adapted its Lifeline programme to enable it to participate in the recovery efforts.

Alltel confirmed that customers must be approved by the FCC or entitled to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster housing assistance. Of each FEMA-qualified household, only one member will be entitled to receive Lifeline assistance.
