StarOffice 8 software, a new version of the desktop productivity suite from technology company Sun Microsystems Inc (Nasdaq:SUNW), has been unveiled.
According to Sun, StarOffice 8 is the first commercial office suite to use the Open Document Format for Office Applications, standardised at OASIS to enable an easier sharing of files. StarOffice 8 offers spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, database and drawing capabilities and runs on Linux, Windows and Solaris operating systems. It consists of five main components - StarOffice Writer, Calc, Impress, Base and Draw, is Microsoft Office compatible and offers improved import and export of Excel, PowerPoint and Word documents.

It is available in seven languages at USD99.95 for the packaged software product (available in October) and USD69.95 for the downloadable version (available immediately). Pricing for enterprise customers is on a tiered, per-user basis, starting at USD35/user and USD25/user for upgrades, and it can be obtained by education organisations at no charge.
Sun also revealed new partnerships with software publishers Avanquest Software and Encore Software, and a continuation of its relationship with SourceNext, enabling global availability of StarOffice 8 for businesses and consumers.
