TELECOMWORLDWIRE-28 September 2005-O2 and Arqiva trial mobile TV(C)1994-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com
A six month trial allowing 400 people in Oxford, UK, to watch TV from their mobile phones has been introduced by mobile network operator O2 and Arqiva, a satellite media solutions company (previously NTL Broadcast).
The trial makes 16 channels available for viewing - including BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, ITV2 and Channel 4 - and aims to determine people's desire to watch mobile TV. Participants will be able to use an on-screen guide to select shows for viewing and BBC News 24, CNN, Coronation Street, CSI and MTV will be amongst programmes available.

Participants in the trial will use the Nokia 7710 widescreen multimedia smartphone to watch TV and test digital video broadcasting - handheld (DVB-H) technology, a standard developed for broadcasting TV signals on mobile devices. DVB-H enables mobiles to handle TV signals in real-time and allows the same signals to be broadcast to multiple handsets.
According to O2, millions of mobile TV viewers are expected globally by 2010 and broadcasters, handset suppliers, operators and regulators will need to work together to regulate the emerging industry.
