Alliance & Leicester, a UK financial group, announced on Wednesday (6 December) it is planning to launch mobile phone banking in 2007.

According to the company, the service will be run via the MONILINK network, a mobile banking service provider and a joint venture between LINK, an operator of a UK ATM network, and Monitise, a division of Morse plc.

Customers using the service will reportedly have access to mini statements and balance enquiries from their mobile phone using MONILINK's application. The service is protected by a personal passcode and any information displayed is automatically deleted.No personal details are stored on the handset itself, which means that information remains secure in case the handset is lost or stolen.In addition, customers with a pre-pay mobile phone account will also soon be able to top-up their mobile directly from their Alliance & Leicester bank account, the company claims.

Alliance & Leicester said that in the future it intends to extend the range of services available using MONILINK, including the ability to access other accounts, the ability to transfer money or pay a bill directly from the handset.
