High street supermarket chain Somerfield has signed an outsourcing contract with Virtual Network Operator (VNO) Vanco for managed telecomms services.

Under the terms of the contract, Vanco will design, install and manage the Somerfield Wide Area Network (WAN), Internet and Firewall services. Vanco will take over the management and maintenance of all Local Area Networks (LAN), the PBX estate and the legacy PSTN/ISDN estate, including call minutes, and will also migrate and manage all existing 3rd party contracts.

The company will reportedly provide services across 887 UK sites, including 873 stores, 11 depot locations, Somerfield's HQ and its data centre in Bristol. The Vanco WAN solution is said to include its MPLS Matrix for the depots, Ethernet for the head office and private ADSL for the stores.

With Vanco's new network solution, Somerfield will realise substantial cost savings immediately and further savings from an annual Active Negotiating Position, claimed the procurement director at Somerfield.

The value of the multi-year contract is estimated at GBP18.9m.
