TELECOMWORLDWIRE-31 March 2006-Websense warns of spam BBC News e-mails(C)1994-2006 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Security company Websense has warned of spam e-mails which contain stories from BBC News and a 'Read More' link and are intended to draw computer users into visiting malicious websites.

Websense said the e-mails are being used to exploit a flaw which was discovered recently in the Internet Explorer browser from software company Microsoft and advised people receiving the e-mails not to follow the link.

According to Websense, clicking on the link will take the user to a bogus website which will install keylogging software on their computer. The keylogger is able to monitor online activity on a number of financial websites and captures information to be sent back to the attacker.

Websense said it is common for malicious website creators to use global brands such as the BBC and claimed the World Cup is being used in the same way, while a similar method was noted following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The BBC News website editor Steve Herrmann said that spoof web pages of the news site have been created on previous occasions.
