The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned that people who purchased certain drugs over the Internet have been sent haloperidol, an anti-psychotic drug, instead of the product they ordered.

FDA laboratory analysis indicates that the drug has been sent to a number of Americans who placed online orders for Ambien, Xanax, Lexapro or Ativan. Several consumers have sought emergency medical treatment after ingesting the suspect product, with symptoms including difficulty in breathing, muscle spasms and muscle stiffness.

As a result of these reports the FDA has reissued its warning about the possible dangers of buying prescription drugs online.

The agency said that the origin of these particular suspect tablets is unknown, but the packages were postmarked in Greece.
