NTT DoCoMo and Hutchison Essar shelve plans to launch i-mode in India

Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo Inc has revealed that it has agreed with Hutchison Essar Ltd, an Indian mobile operator, not to proceed with the contract signed on 15 December 2006, relating to the licensing of the i-mode mobile Internet service in India.

The companies had been working to introduce NTT DoCoMo's i-mode service in India this year. However NTT DoCoMo has confirmed that due to changes in the business environment the two companies determined it would be difficult to introduce the service at this time.

According to NTT DoCoMo, the i-mode mobile e-mail/Internet service is currently used by over 47m people around the world.
