TELECOMWORLDWIRE-20 September 2007-Norway's Telenor ASA subsidiary reaches 15m subscribers milestone(C)1994-2007 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Norwegian telecomms group Telenor ASA said on Thursday (20 September) that its subsidiary, Grameenphone Ltd., a cellular operator in Bangladesh, has crossed the 15m mobile phone subscriber mark.

This equals an increase of 50% from the 10m customers the company noted in November 2006, Telenor said.

Since launch in March 1997, Grameenphone has reportedly built the largest cellular network in the country with base stations in more than 5,000 locations. Presently, nearly 98% of the population in Bangladesh is within the coverage area of the Grameenphone network.

Telenor is the majority (62%) shareholder of Grameenphone while Grameen Telecom Corporation (38%) of Bangladesh is the other shareholder.
