BitDefender, the Romanian software security provider, today (28 August) responded to an article in a US consumer magazine, which reported that US consumers lost USD8.5billion as a result of e-threats, by publishing a list of ten tips to secure computers.
Amongst the list was the advice to install and activate reputable and well tested security software, such as a firewall and anti-virus scanners.

The company also advised users to take time to learn about their systems and not to assume anything. The advise not to make assumptions also applies to emails from unknown or unexpected sources, which should not be opened without careful checking. No email attachments should be opened unless the source is known to be safe or unless the attachment has been verified to be safe by a good scanner.
BitDefender also advises users to ensure that their important files are backed up on a regular basis and that system updates are applied as soon as possible.
The company also suggested that heuristic anti-virus systems, which analyse threats on-the-fly, can be more effective that signature-based anti-virus systems. It reportedly bases this suggestion on the fact that there is a time lag between a virus appearing in the wild and a signature update being made available by the software's publishers and claims that heuristic anti-virus systems, which have the capability to identify newly released threats by emulating their function inside your computer without allowing it to endanger your information, can offer the best protection in today's computing environment.
