TELECOMWORLDWIRE-27 February 2008-World Vision's SandukaNet network launched by Intelsat and iDirect(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com
The launch of SandukaNet, the global network from relief and development agency World Vision, has been announced by Intelsat Ltd, a provider of commercial satellite services, and iDirect Inc, a company of VT Systems Inc (VT Systems), a provider of satellite-based IP communications technology.
Intelsat said it is providing satellite capacity and broadband connectivity, via its GlobalConnex (GXS) Network Broadband service, for World Vision's international operations in remote field locations.
SandukaNet is expected to be operational in 24 countries by mid 2008, offering Internet connectivity via a very small aperture terminal (VSAT) network in over 280 sites installed in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
According to the companies, the network is built on iDirect's satellite communication platform, which will, in conjunction with Intelsat's GXS network, provide secure, reliable broadband connectivity. iDirect technology reportedly supports a wide range of applications, such as emergency communications, VPNs, VoIP and remote connectivity.
SandukaNet will provide global mobile communications between World Vision's sites on the ground in the remote areas it operates in, with the broadband connection expected to improve the organisation's development and relief efforts and provide communications during humanitarian emergencies.
