TELECOMWORLDWIRE-8 February 2008-BBC to launch downloadable iPlayer version for Apple Mac users by end of 2008(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

A download version of the iPlayer online video service from broadcasting company the BBC is to be introduced for users of Apple Mac computers by the end of this year.

Mark Thompson, the BBC's director general, made the announcement in a blog posting on the BBC's website, confirming the BBC's commitment to supporting other platforms. The corporation has previously received criticism for only introducing the download iPlayer service for Windows users.

Thompson said the BBC opted to introduce the service for Windows users only in order to make the service available to the greatest amount of users, in the shortest time frame. He claimed choosing to not develop any systems or services until they could be used by all licence fee payers would limit the BBC's capacity for development substantially.

The BBC offers the iPlayer as a program which enables users to download programmes to their Windows PC, along with a streaming version available on the web to all users, according to BBC News.
