Ciena Corporation (Nasdaq:CIEN), a provider of networks, announced on Monday (21 January) that the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has selected the company's CoreDirector Multiservice Optical Switch for use in its multi-national research networking efforts.

The US Large Hadron Collider Network (US LHCNet) is a global network that interconnects large research facilities throughout the US and Europe, including Geneva and Amsterdam. Caltech has been chartered with designing and managing implementation of the network to support distributed scientific computing and research.

Ciena's CoreDirector switching system is expected to be integral to enabling interconnection within this global research networking community. It will also support distributed scientific computing and research.
