A USD125m contract to deploy a new submarine cable network to link Sidi Kerir, Egypt, with Marseille, France, has been signed by communications solutions provider Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris:ALU) (NYSE:ALU) and Telecom Egypt (TE), an incumbent telecomms operator in Egypt.
The project, named TE North, will allow Telecom Egypt to expand international connectivity and help the operator to improve its network capacity to operate as a wholesale carrier to other operators and expand its service offering to businesses and consumers.

TE North will cover 3,100km and offer an ultimate capacity of 128 x 10Gb/s on eight fibre pairs, reportedly making it one of the region's largest cable systems. This is expected to enable Telecom Egypt to meet increasing demand for broadband services at more affordable costs.
The companies said the new network will allow the country to further establish its role as an international communication hub between Europe and Asia/Africa, while reinforcing Marseille as a communications hub offering open access facilities.
