IBM to supply supercomputer to US DoD Naval Oceanographic Office

IBM (NYSE: IBM) will supply a new supercomputer to the Naval Oceanographic Office Major Shared Resource Center (NAVO MSRC).

The IBM computer, a Power 575 Hydro-Cluster, is powered by the POWER6 microprocessor and is water cooled to improve energy efficiency. The computer has a peak speed of 90 teraFLOPS (90 trillion floating-point operations per second) and will reportedly be one of the most powerful systems run by the Department of Defence.

The NAVO MSRC is one of the four US Department of Defense High Performance Computing MSRCs established by the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program and the new computer will be used to perform oceanographic modelling and weather forecasting for the DoD.
