TELECOMWORLDWIRE-16 July 2008-Toshiba to introduce 6 new hard disk drives(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO:6502) has announced six new hard disk drives that will be available in the autumn including a low noise 400GB flagship model.

The 400GB 7200rpm MK4058GSX will start mass production in September and is intended for premium notebook PC applications. It features an improved read-write head giving increased storage density of 477Mb/mm and allowing the drive to use just two platters. The drive also has a low acoustic noise signature making it suited for multimedia applications. Toshiba claim an increased energy efficiency for the drive making it 20% more efficient than Toshiba's current top-of-the-line MK3252GSX.

Also making use of 7200rpm spin speed are the other five models announced on the 15 July. All of the drives, available in a line-up of 80, 120, 160, 250 and 320GB capacities, support an optional Free Fall Sensor function, that detects a falling HDD and parks the head before impact.

According to Toshiba, all the new drives comply with the European Union's RoHS directive designed to reduce or eliminate the use of hazardous substances in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment.
