NEC Deutschland announces updates to NEC LX Series

Telecomworldwire,  July 16, 2008

TELECOMWORLDWIRE-16 July 2008-NEC Deutschland announces updates to NEC LX Series(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

NEC Deutschland GmbH, a subsidiary of NEC Corporation, a provider of Internet, broadband network and enterprise business solutions, announced on Tuesday (15 July) updates to its NEC LX Series (NEC HPC 144Rc-1 and NEC Express5800 FT) that will improve the performance, scalability and availability of the cluster solution.

According to the company, the NEC HPC 144Rc-1 server update has enabled a theoretical maximum performance of 29 teraflops, while the integration of new fault tolerant server NEC Express5800 FT provides an availability of the master node of over 99.999%.

The new NEC HPC 144Rc-1 reportedly offers 16 single cores in one 1U casing. It features two motherboards, each with 2 Harpertown Series (Quad Core Intel Xeon Series 5400) processors with a 1600MHz FSB - the first Xeon processor using the 45nm Penryn architecture. The top end specification provides for configuration of 2 x 32GB RAM, while ScaleMP technology allows these 64GB to be used in parallel as shared memory by each of the 16 single cores, resulting in a theoretical top performance of over 200 gigaflops.

In addition, NEC has integrated a fault tolerant NEC server into the HPC cluster to serve as the master node. Users can expect unscheduled downtime of less than 5 minutes a year, including repair, upgrade and general maintenance times. Each component is duplicated and Lockstep technology provides for continuous synchronisation, while damaged components can be exchanged as hot plug-ins, the company claims.

Following customer feedback, the LX Series can now be configured with Microsoft HPC Server 2008 in addition to Linux. No pricing details were disclosed.
