Southern Cross Cables, a New Zealand network provider with backbone links for internet traffic from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii to the continental US, has selected Nortel's (NYSE:NT) (TSX:NT) 40G optical technology to upgrade its current 10G optical network.
Nortel's 40G/100G Apaptive Optical Engine will give Southern Cross a simple upgrade route to 100G services in the future and both the current and future upgrades are possible with a simple replacement of a network interface card.

Dean Veverka, VP operations for Southern Cross, said that the upgrade was required to meet customer demand for high bandwidth capabilities to support modern applications and that Southern Cross will be looking at the potential to deploy 40G technology on the firms longer distance submarine segments.
