TELECOMWORLDWIRE-3 July 2008-Indian university NERIST selects Nortel's Wireless Mesh and WiMax solutions(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com
The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), a university in India's Arunachal Pradesh state, has chosen Wireless Mesh and WiMAX solutions from communications solutions provider Nortel (NYSE:NT)(TSX:NT) to deliver indoor and outdoor wireless connectivity across its mountainous campus area.

NERIST is physically divided into two campuses across a rugged terrain, which means that providing higher-bandwidth connectivity through regular cabling would have been expensive and time-consuming. Using Nortel's wireless solutions, the Institute can provide high-speed connectivity across its entire campus, as well as complete mobility for its students and staff.
According to the company, WiMAX is used as the last-mile, high-speed broadband access technology linking the two campuses. Users at both campus sites can access the Institute's network infrastructure using the Wireless Mesh network solution and, while the two campuses are physically divided by the terrain, the entire campus area is unified by a single secure network.
The solution provides high-bandwidth capabilities across several kilometers and is available from Nortel in the unlicensed 5.8GHz band, which means that the Institute can use existing spectrum, saving the cost of licensing, the company claims.
NERIST anticipates over 70% savings on network operational costs by selecting Nortel's Wireless Mesh Network technology rather than a standard Wi-Fi solution. No other financial details were disclosed.
