TELECOMWORLDWIRE-8 July 2008-Texas Instruments introduces new stereo Class-D amplifier(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com
Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE:TXN), a provider of DSP and analogue technologies, introduced on Monday (7 July) the TPA2016D2, an advanced, filter-free, stereo Class-D amplifier that provides a 1.7W per channel output drive capability across an 8Ohm load and improves overall volume versus traditional Class-D products.

According to the company, the new amplifier incorporates programmable dynamic range compression (DRC), which automatically adjusts the audio to the desired loudness range, while protecting the speaker and preventing clipping and distortion. In addition, the chip's flexibility support tools facilitate design and speed time to market for manufacturers of wireless handsets, personal navigation devices, notebook PCs and portable DVD players.
In addition, the DRC capability in the TPA2016D2 frees up to 20% of MIPS in the digital signal processor (DSP) for other functions.
The DRC can reportedly be programmed via digital I2C control and enables designers to specify the design parameters that optimise their system's audio performance. For example, users can select gains from -28 dB to 30 dB as well as program attack/hold/release times, compression ratios and noise threshold values.
The amplifier is optimised to work with other products from TI's portfolio, including audio converters (TLV320AIC3104, TLV320AIC33 and TLV320AIC34), digital-to-analogue converters (TLV320DAC32, PCM1774) and headphone amplifiers (TPA4411, TPA6130A2). It can be used in conjunction with TI's DSP and OMAP processors or the company's integrated LoCosto or OMAP-Vox solutions for wireless handsets, the company said.
The TPA2016D2 is available now in a space-saving 2.2mm x 2.2mm, NanoFree WCSP package. Suggested resale pricing is USD1.60 in 1,000-unit quantities.
