On 17 June, Clickatell, a provider of global mobile messaging solutions, announced that it has been selected by retail grocery chain Fruit & Veg City as the provider of promotional text messages to its customers.
Clickatell's service is used to inform customers of store discounts and deals on offer. According to the company, the expenditure on SMS marketing and communications is much lower than traditional marketing and promotional methods, allowing Fruit & Veg City to target customers in an innovative way cost effectively.

After opting into the free service by simply filling out a form, Fruit & Veg City customers are provided with new promotions and 'on sale' information directly to their mobile phones via SMS. Competitions are also organised to give the store's customers a chance to win free groceries or even overseas holidays.
Clickatell stated that it is working to provide similar services to a number of retail chains around the world as the use of SMS messaging is increasingly being used by retailers who are having to be more creative in attracting retail customers.
No financial details of the agreement were disclosed.
