TELECOMWORLDWIRE-17 June 2008-Voxdale's power LED overheating problem solved in one day - claim(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com
On 17 June Voxdale, a Belgium based engineering consulting firm, announced that it took just one day to solve a power light emitting diode (LED) thermal management problem using Flomerics' EFD.Pro computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software.
According to the company, high power LEDs have the potential to markedly reduce the amount of power required for residential and commercial lighting. Thermal design is crucial in LED system design projects, as 75% to 85% of the energy used to drive LEDs is converted to heat and must be conducted from the LED die.

Voxdale said that a lighting systems manufacturer had built a prototype of its design for an LED system and found that the amount of light delivered by the device and its lifetime were both significantly reduced when the temperature of the prototype rose rapidly beyond the maximum operating levels.
The the housing was redesigned by Voxdale engineers using EFD.Pro, the CFD software. Airflow was improved which eradicated the overheating resulting in light output and life being expanded to the levels required.
