TELECOMWORLDWIRE-17 June 2008-Amsterdam gets Aerea(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Amsterdam today (17 June) saw the launch by Worldmax of a 'light' version of Europe's first city-wide commercial wireless broadband network. Worldmax is the owner of the national, exclusive 3.5Ghz license for the Dutch market.

The WiMAX 802.16e network, called Aerea, will enable early customers the ability to access basic internet services, including games and streamed videos, within the Amsterdam city ring. The full roll-out of the network across the city is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The network was provisioned by Alcatel-Lucent, with financial investment from Intel Capital, the venture capital arm of Intel Corp. Alcatel-Lucent will also be responsible for maintaining the network. Intel Corp intends to deliver integrated WiMAX silicon for use with Centrino processors late in 2008.
