TELECOMWORLDWIRE-18 June 2008-Taiwan test demonstrates high-speed handover using Alvarion WiMAX technology(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Alvarion Inc (Nasdaq:ALVR), a Dutch supplier of wireless network products, announced on 18 June that tests at Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute Campus (ITRI) in Hsinchu, Taiwan had successfully demonstrated seamless sector handover during tests over a 6km section (18 sectors) of road at speeds of over 80km/h while sustaining data rates of more than 12 Mb/s.

The M-Taiwan programme, which is basically a national testbed for wireless technology, is developing WiMAX products at the M-Taiwan WiMAX Application Lab (MTWAL), based at the IRTI. Alvarion, selected as the sole supplier for MTWAL, supplied the 4Motion 802.16e BreezeMAX RAN (radio access network) equipment for the tests.

The tests required the extension of a network throughout Hsinchu Science Park, National Chiao Tung University and National Tsing Hua University.

Various scenarios were tested, involving VoIP, video streaming, IPTV and document exchange applications. High speed handover is critical in mobile scenarios to ensure continuous transfer of data at acceptable rates. It involves a mobile unit exchanging data over a continuous connection with a succession of cell base stations along a route without appreciable delay during the switch from one cell base station to the next. The 802.16e standard calls for handovers to be possible at up to 160 km/h.
