Sun Microsystems Inc (Nasdaq:JAVA), a US computer manufacturer, announced on the 18 June the availability of the Sun Blade X6450 Server Module, a 64bit blade powered by up to four dual- or quad-core Intel Xeon 7300 series processors.

A fully populated Sun Blade 6048 chassis can provide seven TFlops peak performance from a maximum of 768 cores. According to the company, this delivers 71% more cores and 50% more memory than competing blade servers from IBM, HP and Dell.

The module can run a choice of operating systems (including Solaris 10, Linux, Windows and VMWare) and is aimed at computation intensive HPC and enterprise applications.

Entry-level prices for a Sun Blade X6450 start at USD8,655.
