TELECOMWORLDWIRE-24 June 2008-Foundation to open up Symbian(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Several large multinational mobile companies, including Nokia (NYSE: NOK), Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DOCOMO, announced on 24 June that they intend to unite Symbian OS, s60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create a single open mobile platform. Together with AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodaphone, they plan to establish the Symbian Foundation.

Nokia plans to acquire the remaining shares of Symbian Limited that it does not already own and contribute the Symbian and s60 software to the foundation. Sony Ericsson and Motorola intend to contribute technology from UIQ and DOCOMO intend to contribute from its MOAP(S) assets. A full platform will be available to all Foundation members right from the first day of operations of the Foundation, unified with a common UI from the contributions from these contributors.

Selected components of the platform will be made available as open source at the time of launch, with the Foundation working to release more of the platform to open source under the Eclipse Public License (EPL) 1.0 over the following two years.

The Foundation is expected to start operating in early 2009, after the completion of Nokia's acquisition of the Symbian shares from Ericsson. The plan has the full support of shareholders and board members of Symbian Limited.
