TELECOMWORLDWIRE-24 June 2008-IBM opens two new cloud computing centres(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

IBM (NYSE:IBM), in an announcement on 24 June, confirmed the opening of two new cloud computing centres, one in Beijing, China and the other in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Cloud computing is a recent development where users remotely access a 'cloud' of computers, sharing access with other users to large (and expensive) amounts of processing power to perform tasks not otherwise feasible without significant investment in hardware.

The centre in Johannesburg is the first such centre to open in sub-Saharan Africa. IBM said that they intend to use the centre to capitalise on the skills, expertise and rapid growth in the new emerging markets on the continent.

The Beijing centre draws on the expertise of several thousand IBM research and development engineers already employed at IBM's laboratories in China and will be involved in research into the uses and development of cloud computing, as well as providing services to China's developing service economy.
