TELECOMWORLDWIRE-26 June 2008-Fujitsu opens new London data centre(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Fujitsu Services, an IT services company, will open a new Tier III data centre near London this week. The centre, located within 35 miles of the city on a brown field site in a refurbished warehouse, has cost Fujitsu GBP44m to develop..

In the announcement on the 26 June, the company said that the centre has been designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible, with energy savings built into the design allowing the centre to be nearly twice as energy efficient as previous ones. The data centre will achieve a power usage efficiency of 1.6 (62% Data Centre infrastructure Efficiency measure).

The building uses evaporators and cooling towers to remove excess heat, while heat pumps scavenge heat from the cooling process to condition fresh air as it enters the technical halls. Spray humidifiers are used in the air inlets in place of the traditional steam humidifiers to further reduce energy consumption.

Variable fans and pumps in the cooling system allow the centre to react to low load situations to further reduce energy consumption and Fujitsu have fitted Diesel Rotary UPS (which are more efficient than standard UPS systems) to maintain electricity supply in the event of a mains power outage.

All IT systems in the building can be consolidated and managed to further optimise the power usage in the centre. The announcement said that once all these measures are in place, Fujitsu expect to save the equivalent of the power consumed by 6,000 homes per year.

Fujitsu Services is the European IT services division of the US based Fujitsu Group.
