General Dynamics Information Technology, part of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), has been awarded a contract by the US Army to expand the information technology and network infrastructure at Fort Meade, Maryland.

The contract, worth a potential USD16.5m over two years if all options are exercised, is part of the US Army Program Executive Office, Enterprise Information Systems' Infrastructure Modernization (IMOD) programme to expand capabilities to support evolving US Army requirements.

General Dynamics will deploy a high speed broadband network to support enhanced operations at the base. Fort Meade will be the new home of the Defense Systems Agency, which is re-locating to the base as part of the Base Realignment and Closing (BRAC) initiatives. The base population is expected to increase by around 4,300 by 2011.
