Wireless LAN equipment from Meru Networks (Meru), a provider of wireless infrastructure solutions, has been deployed by Utah State University, in the US, across its 400 acre campus with wireless coverage for over 25,000 students, faculty and staff, replacing the university's existing wireless system of around 50 access points.

Meru said over 700 wireless access points have been installed in 150 buildings, including all academic facilities and residences on the Logan, Utah, campus, and various remote sites across the state. Coverage is also to be added in frequently used outdoor venues and inter-building corridors, providing a basis for VoIP usage across the campus.
According to Meru, the university uses Meru's AP201 single-radio IEEE 802.11a/b/g access point, which supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz operation, with Meru's OAP180 Rugged Access Point tested for outdoor coverage and to be deployed this spring. The company has also deployed nine Meru MC3000 series controllers, divided into academic and residential, each with an N 1 configuration for failover purposes.
The Utah State wireless network is currently based on the IEEE 802.11b/g standard and will start to incorporate the 802.11n standard in the next major upgrade, with the technology also suited to handle VoIP.
