TELECOMWORLDWIRE-16 May 2008-Covad completes WiMAX lab test and field trial in San Francisco Bay area(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

A WiMAX lab test and field trial has been completed in the San Francisco Bay area, USA, by Covad Wireless (Covad), a subsidiary of Covad Communications Company, a national provider of integrated voice and data communications, following which Covad will now move forward with its plans to introduce WiMAX service later in 2008 with Axxcelera, based in Santa Barbara, as its preferred WiMAX equipment vendor.

Covad said the trial incorporated field testing for the reach and performance of its service with Axxcelera's AB-MAX platform WiMAX equipment. The trial reportedly confirmed a total of 8.0 Mb/s symmetric bandwidth at five plus miles and registered under 1% packet loss and less than 50ms network latency.

According to Covad, it will use WiMAX equipment from Axxcelera to power its Super-T product, which provides up to 6Mb/s symmetric, business-class broadband access.

The company intends to start deploying its new WiMAX equipment at base station locations in Los Angeles, Orange County and the San Francisco Bay Area, with deployment to continue into next year.

Covad claimed Axxcelera's WiMAX equipment will enable it to improve its existing Internet access services with further Ethernet-based wireless service features including class of service options, expanded network capacity and enhanced reliability.
