The PacketMAX solution from Aperto Networks (Aperto), a provider of advanced carrier-grade WiMAX base stations and subscriber units, is being deployed by the Community of Terespol in eastern Poland to provide high-speed voice, data and video services via an integrated WiMAX/Wi-Fi municipal network.
Engineering for the deployment, which is being extended to the municipality's 12 villages, is being provided by Biatel SA, a system integrator headquartered in Warsaw, Poland.

Aperto said the WiMAX network in Terespol operates in the 3.5GHz band and incorporates PacketMAX 5000 and PacketMAX 3000 base stations, along with PacketMAX 300 and PacketMAX 100 subscriber units.
The Mayor of Terespol Community, Krzysztof Iwaniuk, said the community now has the throughput and redundancy to support an integrated WiMAX/Wi-Fi network with high quality of service (QoS), while lowering overall networking costs. He claimed efficient, reliable LAN-to-LAN access will be made available shortly to most of the community's citizens and government workers through the municipal network.
Biatel confirmed the geography around Terespol made it hard to deal with and needed extensive RF planning, in particular to avoid interference with networks in the Republic of Belarus, a neighbouring region, and claimed PacketMAX's flexibility was essential to the deployment.
