A commercial WiMAX rev-e network has been launched in Bolivia, based on the WiMAX 802.16e-2005 standard, by Nuevatel PCS, a telecomms operator in Bolivia, where it operates under the VIVA brand name, and communications solutions provider Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris:ALU) (NYSE:ALU), to support VoIP, high-speed Internet access and other data services for Nuevatel customers.

Alcatel-Lucent, which worked with ZyXEL on the contract, provided a complete WiMAX solution including base stations, wireless access controllers, software and application platforms. It also supplied services such as design and planning for end-to-end network integration services, radio network planning, installation and commissioning, project management and support services for Nuevatel's network.
According to Alcatel-Lucent, its WiMAX solution incorporates technologies such as beam forming, which enables a service provide to improve indoor penetration of the radio signal and reduce interference and the number of radio sites needed for coverage. It also includes MIMO, which helps make radio links more robust and reportedly almost doubles the capacity delivered in dense urban environments.
Nuevatel confirmed the network will enable it to provide a wide range of wireless broadband services to business and residential customers and better serve customers in urban centres such as La Paz, El Alto, Santa Cruz and Cochamba.
