ZTE USA and Qualcomm announce collaboration with Aircell

ZTE USA Inc, a subsidiary of ZTE Corporation, a provider of telecomms equipment and network solutions, and Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq:QCOM), a provider of digital wireless communications products and services, announced on Wednesday (19 November) their collaboration with Aircell, a provider of wireless data and voice communications in business and commercial aviation, to create the networking platform for Aircell's new in-flight Internet service, Gogo, which began in August 2008 on select American Airlines flights.

According to the company, Aircell's Air-to-Ground (ATG) service relies on ZTE's EV-DO Rev. A base stations and IP switching platformand Qualcomm's aircraft-mounted modems. ZTE's base stations are stationed across the US to support service for Aircell's airline customers. While en route, subscriber Wi-Fi traffic is transmitted to ZTE's networking equipment via Qualcomm's aircraft-mounted modems. The technology was engineered to accommodate the high speed and high altitude of aircraft connecting with the base station.
