Red Bend Software, a provider of mobile software management technology, has announced that its vCurrent Mobile software for firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updating and vDirect Mobile client for device management has been implemented in the Katana Eclipse handset manufactured by Kyocera (NYSE:KYO), a Japanese handset manufacturer, and sold under the SANYO brand in the US for customers of Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S), a provider of wireless and wireline communications services.

According to the company, vCurrent Mobile wirelessly updates firmware of handsets that are already in consumers' hands. The solution also offers a fail-safe function that ensures safe update completion even if power is turned off during the update. The software is interoperable with device management (DM) servers compliant with standards from the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). vDirect Mobile, a DM client that is also interoperable with standards-based DM servers, allows operators and manufacturers to provision new subscribers and configure applications and network settings.
Kyocera's Katana Eclipse is an SCP-6750 SANYO branded handset shipped for US-based Sprint Nextel. It is made in the image of a 'katana,' a Japanese sword, and includes LED illumination that can be customised. The surface of the handset is equipped with a liquid-crystal display and music keys, and the music player can be operated even when the handset is closed. In addition, the handset has been equipped with Bluetooth stereo and features a range of rich multi-media functionality.
