Verizon Wireless, a US mobile network operator, announced on 22 October that its technicians have deployed a cell-on-wheels (COW) at Tropicana Field, the home of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team, to ensure sufficient network coverage for the fans expected to attend the team's World Series Major League Baseball match against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The COW features a 75-foot telescoping antenna and 11 dedicated voice and high-speed data channels, each of which can handle 'hundreds' of phone calls and data transmissions simultaneously. The unit will strengthen the Verizon Wireless network in the stadium area and throughout Tampa Bay during the expected spike in wireless calls, text messages, picture and video messages, internet connections and other wireless traffic as the home team chases its first World Series crown.

Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon Communications (NSE:VZ) and Vodafone (NYSE:VOD) (LSE:VOD). The company said that it has invested USD1.8bn in Florida and USD45bn nationally in its network infrastructure and services since the company was formed.
