Harmonic Inc (Nadaq:HLIT), a provider of video solutions, announced on Sunday (14 September) that Portugal Telecom (NYSE:PT), a telecomms and multimedia operator based in Portugal, has deployed a broad range of Harmonic's IP-based MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) compression and stream processing solutions.

With this launch, Portugal Telecom will reportedly become one of Europe's first telecomms operators to offer a MPEG-4 DTH service. It will also expand its reach and enhance its service offering to subscribers across Portugal, while investing in a platform that can scale to accommodate future services.

Portugal Telecom's new digital video headend, which was implemented by Novabase/OctalTV, a video system integrator in Portugal, includes Harmonic's DiviCom Electra 7000 high definition (HD) encoders, Electra 5400 standard definition (SD) encoders and the ProStream 1000 stream processing platform with DiviTrackIP distributed statistical multiplexing, DVB scrambling and Forward Error Correction capability.

Financial details of the deployment were not disclosed.
