Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, a telecomms solutions provider, announced on 25 September that it has been contracted by AXIS, an Indonesian mobile operator, to design, build, deploy and manage a network of some 4,000 base stations across Indonesia.

The management part of the contract will last for three years until 2010. The deployment includes the provision of backhaul systems, both optical and microwave, and the installation of a nationwide core network and intelligent network systems for AXIS.

AXIS is jointly owned by Saudi Telecom Company of Saudi Arabia and Malaysian Maxis Communications. It currently has coverage in 90 Indonesian cities and over 1 million customers. No financial details of the contract with Huawei were disclosed.
