TELECOMWORLDWIRE-29 September 2008-TeleCommunication Systems Inc receives patent for 'Location Derived Presence Information'(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

TeleCommunication Systems Inc (TCS) (NasdaqGM: TSYS), a company that develops and applies wireless data communications technology, revealed on 26 September that it has been awarded patent number 7,426,380 from the US Patent and Trademark Office for 'Location Derived Presence Information'.

This invention allows information to be provided regarding a user's presence, such as "available", "unavailable" or "busy", together with the location of a wireless device. Both location and presence services are message intensive within a mobile operator's network. The invention reduces network messaging traffic and improves reliability within an operator's network by using a single message for both presence and location information, TCS said.

Presence information which determines the state and availability of a mobile user is expected to enhance social networking applications such as friend or family locator services and location-based instant messaging.
