Palm Inc (Nasdaq:PALM), a mobile products company, and Alltel Wireless, a wireless network operator in the US, announced on Thursday (5 March) that the Treo Pro smartphone is now available at Alltel Wireless retail stores and on-line at alltel.com.

According to the company, Treo Pro offers support for EV-DO Rev. A data speeds, Wi-Fi for data and GPS capabilities. It enables users to browse the web and send and receive e-mails at mobile wireless broadband speeds. In addition, it is the first Palm phone available with Internet Explorer Mobile 6, with options for either a mobile-optimised or desktop-like browsing experience. The device features a high-resolution colour touch screen and a full QWERTY keyboard with a removable battery that supports up to five hours of talk.

Treo Pro also supports Microsoft Direct Push Technology for up-to-date e-mail, contacts and calendars. With the deployment of Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008, it delivers increased security, easier smartphone management and access to information on the corporate network. In addition, the phone offers Palm specific enhancements to the Windows platform, including: ringer switch, which silences the device immediately; clock and date screen saver; new voicemail indicator; as well as dedicated e-mail and calendar buttons.

In addition, integrated GPS means that the phone offers turn-by-turn directions, maps and point-of-interest searches for locations such as restaurants or stores. Palm's Wi-Fi hardware and software innovations on Treo Pro make it easy to get on-line fast and manage network connections and power usage, the company said.

No financial or pricing details were disclosed.
