Network-management utility for HP's uninterruptible power supplies now integrates with HP OpenView for Windows; HP names product line PowerWise UPS
Business Wire, Dec 5, 1994
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 5, 1994--Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that HP PowerWise Assistant, the power-management software for its line of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), now comes equipped with a network management utility. This new functionality allows the UPS tobe managed remotely from any node on a Novell NetWare or TCP-IP/network using the Windows(TM) interface. The network management utility is based on HP OpenView for Windows network- and system-management software.
HP also announced that it has named the product line, which was introduced on October 17, "HP PowerWise" UPS.
The PowerWise Assistant network-management utility allows network administrators to monitor power proactively by providing power-problem notification and UPS status updates. The $99 (U.S.) software package includes extended functionality for the HP OpenView for Windows platform that allows the PowerWise UPS to be treated as a Window's client: controllable and configurable from any workstation on the network. In addition, an HP OpenView Topology Map uses a color-coded system to provide immediate and easy-to-read notification of power fluctuations.
HP POWERWISE'S ON-LINE TOPOLOGY AND INTERNAL SNMP CARD ADD RELIABILITY
To protect mission-critical applications, the HP PowerWise UPS use on-line topology, which provides higher reliability than line-interactive and stand-by topologies; superior line conditioning; and no transfer to back up power. Constant line conditioning provides the server with clean, regulated sine-wave output that is isolated from any line disturbances. The on-line topology also protects against voltage dropout and continuously trickle-charges the battery to ensure that networks stay up and running.
The internal SNMP (1) card remains active during power outages and UPS shutdowns. An SNMP network connection and direct serial connection to the server free the user from relying on the network to ensure safe, unattended server shutdown. HP PowerWise Assistant also features programmable software-driven controls for easy installation and configuration. In addition, auto-self-test ensures that critical components are working and programmable shutdown/restart timing conserves power in "sleep mode."
HP PowerWise UPS works with leading network operating systems, including AIX, HP-UX (2), Novell NetWare, Microsoft(R) Windows NT, IBM OS/2, SCO UNIX, Solaris and UNIXWARE.
HP's PowerWise UPS and PowerWise Assistant are covered by HP's comprehensive service and support, including worldwide customer support and easy access to technical information. They come standard with a two-year next-business-day replacement policy, with service available from HP or service-authorized resellers in the United States.
