SunSoft extends SolarNet PC-UNIX networking with the immediate availability of SolarNet PC-X; Provides Microsoft Windows users with simple point-and-click access to business-critical Solaris applications

Business Wire, Dec 6, 1994

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 6, 1994--SunSoft Inc., a leading provider of PC-to-enterprise networking software, today announced the immediate availability of its new SolarNet PC-X software solution.

SolarNet PC-X provides LAN-based or mobile Microsoft Windows users with simple point-and-click access to a wealth of business critical applications running on Solaris and other UNIX systems all from within their familiar Windows environment. This product also enables information professionals to be more responsive to their users' needs for business-specific applications by reducing the development time and complexity required to create Solaris/UNIX and Windows PC solutions.

SolarNet PC-X reinforces SunSoft's commitment to deliver a total PC-to-enterprise networking solution with the SolarNet family. SunSoft debuted the SolarNet family of products in October. SolarNet PC-X is the first of its kind to be offered as part of a single integrated PC-to-UNIX solution from any major software provider. SolarNet delivers one of the most comprehensive suites of integrated PC connectivity integration and administration solutions available today. SolarNet PC-X extends this capability by delivering access to X-based applications and services from any Microsoft Windows PC across dial-up or LAN-based facilities. PC-X can be used by itself or in conjunction with other SolarNet facilities such as PC-NFS pro for Windows.

"SolarNet PC-X is a prime example of how we are leveraging our industry leadership in UNIX system software and PC-to-UNIX networking," said Jim Billmaier, vice president and general manager of SunSoft's Network Products Business. "We leverage our expertise in these two disciplines by integrating them within the SolarNet family. SolarNet provides a simple-to-use and easy-to-administer environment. By marrying the popular Windows client environment to the powerful Solaris/UNIX application servers, we deliver all of the capabilities that our Fortune 1000 customers need for client/server solutions," he added.

Enhanced Productivity

SolarNet PC-X shields both local and remote users from the complexity of the network with the simple point-and-click of desktop icons to launch enterprise applications. PC users are empowered by information access to make better decisions.

Lower Costs

SolarNet PC-X helps organizations lower the total cost of integrating heterogeneous environments. Client/server applications can be deployed on MS-Windows PCs without having to pay the price of developing two separate graphical interfaces. With SolarNet PC-X it is no longer necessary to purchase workstations or X terminals to provide PC users with access to enterprise applications.

Telecommuters and Remote Access Support

PC-X is ideal for many mobile applications, such as sales force automation. Hotel rooms are no longer isolated from the enterprise. Accessing enterprise information over standard telephone line connections from hotels or homes provides all of the same features and capabilities that LAN-based users have enjoyed. PC-X makes telecommuting a reality. Enterprise graphical applications which were found only within corporate walls are now available to the corporate work force from wherever they are.

Multiple Platform Support

In addition to the Solaris operating environment, SolarNet PC-X works with other UNIX servers such as HP, IBM and DEC platforms.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for SolarNet PC-X begins at $345 per user and decreases with volume. SolarNet PC-X is available immediately for all supported UNIX systems, and is sold through SunSoft's extensive network of authorized resellers and distributors.
