Emc Signs Oem Agreement With Unisys For New Modarray Series Of Storage Systems
Business Wire, Nov 10, 1994
HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1994-- EMC Corporation today announced it has signed an OEM agreement with Unisys for EMC's new ModARRAY Series, a family of continuously available, high performance RAID storage systems designed for a variety of today's open systems platforms.
ModARRAY is developed by EMC's Open Storage Group and is targeted at the OEM market, providing computer system manufacturers and integrators with the opportunity to leverage EMC's proven technology and time-to-market capabilities. The ModARRAY Series utilizes superior engineering to achieve unmatched levels of "pay-as- you-grow" capacity, performance, connectivity, continuous availability and serviceability that are needed for business-critical departmental and distributed computing applications.
Unisys is offering ModARRAY to its customers as the OSS8000 Series for the U6000 family of UNIX platforms. "After reviewing the available technology in the RAID market, we felt ModARRAY was best in its class and was well suited for our client's diverse storage requirements," said Carmin Lynch, vice president and general manager of Unisys' Solutions Systems Division. "Unisys and EMC are continuing a successful business partnership that provides our customers access to the leading technology of both companies."
Compatible with SCSI-equipped, open systems platforms, ModARRAY provides users with capacity and performance features that are both cost-effective and highly scalable. ModARRAY is a modular, upgradeable system available in configurations ranging from 4 GB for deskside systems and up to 206GB for rack mount models. ModARRAY features the option to provide additional fault tolerant features such as dual active/active controllers with automatic controller failover and recovery, as well as uninterruptible power supply support.
ModARRAY is designed as a customer maintainable system with primary components packaged in self-contained modules. Standard hot replacement capability allows units to be removed and replaced by the customer in seconds with no user interruptions. The host system user interface provides for setting concurrent RAID levels 0, 1, 3 and 5 to match application requirements.
"ModARRAY provides computer system manufacturers and systems integrators with unrivaled flexibility and capability in meeting the needs of their customers," said Paul Noble, vice president and general manager of EMC's OEM Group. "For those leading companies that have a desire to keep costs down and bring technology to market quickly, ModARRAY provides one more compelling reason to partner with EMC."
EMC's OEM operation is expected to generate more than $100 million in 1994 revenue for EMC. The operation has been providing OEM versions of EMC's Symmetrix family of Integrated Cached Disk Arrays for over two-and-a-half years. The OEM Group provides customers with the ability to integrate industry leading storage technology and gain access to custom design, manufacturing efficiencies, sales and support programs and worldwide ISO9000 manufacturing facilities.
